How does counselling help with mental health issues?

Counselling can help by providing a relationship that is safe, non judgemental, objective and supportive. Clients use the time to explore their wishes, fears, emotions and options about how to manage an issue.

What to expect in a counselling session in the UK?

Counselling with me is 1 hour long. We will agree how the counselling should be, what you want to get out of sessions and will continually work to refine by discussing what is helping and what is not, as we go. I work pluralistically. This is a person centred, holistic integrative approach that primarily puts you, the client at the centre of the work.

I like to use the analogy of eating at a new restaurant. As your counsellor I might be seen as the chef – I know about food, but I don’t yet know what you might like, so I offer you the menu. As I get to know you I can recommend dishes and as you try them. Sometimes I will use my experience to make particular recommendations or suggest we don’t do an exercise and provide a rationale as to why.

About My Services

What types of counselling does Sarah Kent-Jones offer?

I offer a pluralistic approach to therapy. This means I combine different methods to fit your exact needs. My work blends:
  • Person-centred therapy to keep your goals at the heart of our work.
  • Psychodynamic therapy to look at deeper roots.
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to manage everyday thoughts and habits.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

  • Counselling is usually shorter-term work. It focuses on a specific issue in your life right now.
  • Psychotherapy goes deeper and often lasts longer. It looks at long-standing patterns or difficult experiences from childhood.

How does counselling help with mental health issues?

Counselling gives you a safe, private space. I will listen to you without judgment. Together, we will explore your fears, feelings, and choices so you can find the best way forward.

What can I expect during a counselling session?

  • Length: Each session lasts for 1 hour.
  • Style: We work as a team. I bring my mental health experience, but you choose what we talk about.
  • Review: We will check in often to see what is helping you and what is not.
